Quasi-Market and Privatization in the Context of the Swedish Welfare State

Osvaldo Salas

The globalization of the economy and the demographic changes weaken the economic structure of the welfare State. To a large extent, this explains changes in the management of public service production, among others, privatization policies. In Sweden, the new administrative management is carried out within the framework of a quasi-market aimed at reducing operating costs and increase the quality of public services offered. This article examines the characteristics and properties of a quasi-market in general and its particular application to the Swedish nursing homes. The quasi-market effects are analyzed by comparing two types of administrative management: municipal and private. The results of the descriptive and comparative analysis show no significant differences between the two types of administrative management.
