The Summer School on Latin American Politics is an original initiative of the ECPR Standing Group on Latin American Politics, the aim of which is to improve the academic offer on Latin American politics to European students of political science. The project consists of three schools focusing on different topics: the first one takes place at the University of Salamanca between the 29th June and the 8th July 2011. The two successive schools will be organised in 2012 in Lisbon and 2013 in Hamburg. They will tackle the topics of regional integration and the outcomes of democratic regimes, respectively.

The 1st Summer School on Latin American Politics focuses on “Political Institutions and Actors: Comparative Approaches”. These almost two weeks of lectures and workshops are meant to provide theoretical and conceptual support for the development of doctoral researches as well as advanced knowledge on democratic consolidation, comparative institutions, and presidentialism.

  • Basic Requirements

The ECPR Summer School on Latin American Politics is open to PhD students of political science writing their dissertations on topics related to Latin American politics.

  • Language

The course will be taught in English, so participants must have good command of the language.

  • Application and registration procedure

Applicants must submit their applications by March 25, 2011 via email to politica@usal.es.

Because space is limited to a maximum of 28 participants, students will be selected according to a competitive process. Priority will be given to students working on topics covered in this summer school.

Applications to the 1st ECPR Summer School on Latin American Politics must include the following documents:

A complete application form in English

A brief CV (2 pages maximum) highlighting the applicantʼs research profile, in English, Portuguese or Spanish;

A brief thesis or dissertation abstract (250 words maximum), in English;

A summary of the piece of work to be discussed at the school (max. 500 words), in English;

A letter of recommendation from a professor or supervisor at the applicantʼs home institution, written in English, Portuguese or Spanish. The recommendation should be sent via email to politica@usal.es directly from the authorʼs email address.

Applications will be reviewed and students notified of the result of their application by April 1, 2011. Candidates will receive notification regarding their admission via email.

Successful applicants must pay a registration fee of 300 euros no later than May 3, 2011.

Failing to register means that the selection committee can offer the left space to the next candidate in the waiting list.

Registered participants should send to politica@usal.es the piece of their work they wish to discuss during the sessions (in English, Portuguese or Spanish) no later than June 10.

  • Structure of the School

The summer school will extend over a ten day period. Every working day from Wednesday 29 June until Friday 8 July, participants will attend a morning and an afternoon session. On the weekend, a social programme will be organised.

Morning sessions will last four hours. They will consist of a lecture given by a guest professor and a discussion on the contents of the class. Students are expected to read the materials assigned by professors for each class, as well as to actively participate in the debates that will take place during each session.

For the afternoon session, students will be split into two workshops with the purpose of presenting their own work. Each of these workshops will develop under the supervision of a guest lecturer. Papers presented will be commented by another of the participants in the workshop and by the professor in charge of the session. A maximum of four papers will be discussed per day; two papers per group. Any remaining time during the afternoon session should allow the participants to meet individually the lecturers for further questions and consultations.
