Since 2012, the Government of the Republic of Korea in collaboration with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) has organized two Global e-Government Forums. The first Forum, held in 2012, focused on “Smart Government for a Better Future”. The second Forum was held in 2013 under the theme of "Smart Government and Smart Society: Openness, Sharing, Communication and Collaboration", where it was decided that the 2014 Forum would be held in Kazakhstan.

To continue its global initiative to promote e-government development, UNDESA in partnership with the Government of Kazakhstan will hold the third Global E-Government Forum in Astana. The Forum will focus on ‘Smart Governance for Sustainable Development: New Opportunities for Partnerships in the Networked Society” and will address emerging issues, such as Smart Governance, Networked Society, Open Government, Open Data and Social Media. It will also help raise participants’ awareness of new e-government trends and issues, including cutting-edge technologies and innovative practices to address complex governance challenges. It will also provide a platform for discussion and exchange of experiences among representatives from relevant governmental organizations, country representatives, as well as world renowned experts and academics. The ultimate goal of the Forum is to enhance government capacity in promoting smart governance, particularly in developing countries, through presentations, discussions, and peer-to-peer learning. In addition, the 2014 United Nations E-Government Survey Special Awards Ceremony will be held in recognition of the contribution of winner countries to e-government development.
