The term "Generation Y" refers to those born between 1980 and 1995. This age group is the successor to Generation X (1960-1980) and the  (1945-1960).

The Ys are the first generation in history to have grown up with Internet, cell phones and Facebook-style social networking. They are accustomed to real-time communication, belonging to cross-border interest groups and freely expressing themselves in online forums. This in turn influences the way they see the world in general, and the working world in particular. They have been described as possessing specific relationships to time, the collective, hierarchy, the idea of a career, etc.

Faced with the retirement of the Baby  Boomers and the need to replace them, the French  Civil  Service is interested in how to attract this new generation. To do so, it needs to understand Generation Y's hopes and motivations, and how they function, and to decide what impact this has on public-service values, management, dialogue and training.

The 10th International Symposium on Public Management will bring together public-sector managers, business leaders and researchers to discuss this strategic topic.
